Quintana di Foligno

June - September

Giostra dell’anello among the most exciting and well-known in Italy, it is divided into two phases, the “Giostra” in June and the “Rivincita” in September. Both editions include two weeks of entertainment where you can immerse yourself in an atmosphere out of time, or rather from another time. Experiencing Foligno in those days means finding yourself at least for a while in the 1600s; the historical re-enactments, the goliardic challenges and last but not least the neighborhood taverns where you can taste typical Umbrian specialties and our best wines allow you to travel not only with your imagination but also with your body. The joust sees 10 knights challenge each other, representing the 10 city districts, during the competition, each opponent must travel the impervious 8-shaped track of the “Campo de li Giochi” and right where the diagonals intersect, the statue of the god Mars with an outstretched arm hangs a hook with a ring that the knights must pierce with a lance. The joust includes three rounds with rings that get smaller at each turn; the knight who finishes the round fastest, with the fewest penalties, wins the coveted banner. The evening before the joust, the streets of the historic center come alive with the historical parade, where hundreds of figures in sumptuous baroque clothes enchant young and old. At the end of the parade in Piazza della Repubblica, the competition announcement for the following day's competition is read and the knights are blessed and the long-awaited draw that will determine the starting order takes place. The event is also particularly appreciated for the multitude of collateral events that follow one another: first the Fiera dei Soprastanti, a faithful reconstruction of a market of the time where costumed figures, police forces of the time, jugglers, musicians and fire eaters wander among the stalls. On this occasion, purchases are made only with period currency: the Quattrino di Foligno which can be exchanged on site. Next comes the Gara dei Convivi, a culinary competition that features a sumptuous baroque banquet. During the “Rivincita” period, the atmosphere is enlivened by the Segni Barocchi Festival, musical, cinematographic and theatrical shows with museums, restaurants and shops that remain open until late at night.
