We propose the provisional program of the solemn celebrations that will take place in Assisi on the occasion of the Feast of the Patron Saint of Italy, Saint Francis.
They usually begin on October 3rd at Santa Maria degli Angeli, where from 10:30 the Flower Parade begins from the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo to the Papal Basilica, where the mass “In Transitu” will be celebrated and at the Cappella del Transito Brother Jacopa offers the ash cloth, candles, mostaccioli and incense. The Pro Loco of Santa Maria degli Angeli offers flowers to be placed in the place where Saint Francis died in 1226.
In the afternoon, the meeting between citizens and representatives of the region of Italy takes place, offering oil (in turn, each of the regions of Italy offers the oil that fuels the votive lamp that burns in the crypt of Saint Francis and becomes a source of light and blessing for the Christian on the path of Faith), followed by the procession to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli to participate in the commemoration of the passing of Saint Francis. Following this, the offering of lamps by the Knights of Saint Francis of Assisi and of oil by representatives of the region of Italy.
On October 4, everything moves to Assisi, where there is a meeting with the civil and religious authorities, the procession to the Papal Basilica of Saint Francis which will host the Holy Mass.
In the afternoon at the Lower Basilica of San Francesco, the Pontifical Vespers will be held in the Papal Chapel, followed by the religious procession and blessing to Italy and the World with the “Chartula” (autograph of the blessing) of San Francesco. At the end there will be the distribution of olive branches to the civil authorities and the Faithful present and in conclusion the performance of the Canticle of the Creatures.
